bespoke Music Education consultancy
Advice, Facilitation, Evaluation & project Management

I am passionate about how music can change lives.

As a manager and consultant for over 30 years, both across the UK and overseas, I know musical learning can transform individuals, schools and communities.

My goal is that, as Whyte Music Ltd, I might be useful to organisations who are seeking help to realise or consolidate their ideas, breathe new life into their projects and programmes, or simply wish to take stock, reflect on and/or celebrate the work achieved to date.

I can provide advice on an ad-hoc basis or linked to something specific. I am skilled in facilitating conversations, meetings and events with an inclusive approach. I have carried out various formal evaluations of funding programmes or specific events as well as acting as a critical friend to bring a fresh pair of eyes where needed. Finally, I'm a born organiser who will manage a project from an initial embryonic idea to its culmination.

A short biography

I re-established Whyte Music Ltd in September 2026 following nine years as the CEO of the UK Association for Music Education, Music Mark.

I was born in Eastliegh and grew up in Winchester. I learnt a number of instruments growing up and was honoured to have attended the Hampshire Specialist Music Course and played in the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra for two years on Bassoon. Graduating with a Music Degree from Surrey University in 1989, I started my career working for the Arts Council. Following three years supporting both Music and Dance and Mime departments in Tunbridge Wells and Winchester, I moved to London to work first for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and then the Royal Academy of Music.

In 1995 I went freelance and apart from a brief return to employment from ‘97 to ‘99 – as Administrator at Surrey Arts – I worked as a consultant for over 20 years for over 50 organisations and individuals. From this long list, early highlights included helping to set up the Handel House Museum, running The Rehearsal Orchestra and curating an annual series of concerts at Fenton House for the National Trust. I joined Youth Music as a Regional Coordinator in 2001 and over the following 10 years had verious roles including developing funding programmes and assessing applications. I also worked for the Music Manifesto and subsequently the Department for Education to set up and then support the National Singing Programme – Sing Up from 2005 to 2011, returning to undertake some research for Sing Up in it's 10th year (2017).

My extensive CV of experiences and clients resulted in an invitation to become an Associate Lecturer in the Music Department at Surrey University, in 2014. I taught and supported four co-horts of final year students at Surrey, as well as being asked to deliver a number of guest lectures at the University of Winchester.

In a career of many highlights, one that stands out was helping to develop and subsequently become the Strategic Advisor for the British Council’s World Voice Programme.  Promoting singing as a tool for learning and wider child development, between 2013 and 2017 I oversaw the setting up programmes in over 20 countries around the globe, as well as securing funding for and managing two UK residencies. These residencies partnered English Music Services with singing leaders from overseas to share with each other and deliver workshops which explored singing tranditions from around the world with pupils in the North West and North East of England.

I currently live in a village just north of Winchester with my husband, a Senior Lecuturer in Psycology at the University of Winchester, and our two cats (who regularly join online meetings).

Apparently every website has to have a blog page these days... I'm going to try and write something every month for this site (and post it on LinkedIn if you're following me there).  Let's hope I have something to say!
